Jekyll Island and The Farm at Okefenokee
We explore Jekyll Island and The Farm at Okefenokee for a few days in southern Georgia and make new friends.
We drove from our house to the Jekyll Island Club Resort. We've heard about this place and it's fun to finally come see it.
After driving 45 minutes I realized I had completely forgotten to pack the Leica cameras! It was worth going back home to get them. So that extended our travel from 5.5 hours to 7.25 hours.
We checked in then grabbed a bite to eat at the Pantry.
Then we took a walk around the property. It's a full moon tonight and made the lighting really quite nice. It was also gently raining/misting so the whole atmosphere was ethereal and magical.
Our second day we rented bikes and pedaled around the island.
We found some huge and beautiful mushrooms along the way.
We visited Driftwood Beach. Some of The Color Purple was filmed here.
The pictures are out of order because the time in the Leica's is still on Portugal time! This was Mitzi at breakfast :)
Here we go, Driftwood Beach. We enjoyed it so much, the weather was perfect and beautiful.
We grabbed a light lunch when we got back to the hotel.
In the evening we got together with the Robert Breedlove group. People interested in Bitcoin and Regenerative Farming. The Federal Reserve was created in 1910 in this hotel, in the room right across from where we had dinner.
As one guy in the group said, "F*** the Fed" haha.
It was a beautiful dinner with so many options and it was all delicious.
I left the hotel at 5:30a with the guys to go hunt wild hogs. Mitzi left at 7a with the ladies to go foraging.
It's kind of funny to see the hog hunting and foraging pictures in chronological order. We were having very different experiences at the same time!
All the food is made from scratch and from the farm. The woman who made these croissants for break is a master pastry chef.
The second hog was about 350 pounds and they had to kill it because it would be too dangerous (they have terribly sharp tusks) to take it back to the farm. So they killed it with a knife to the heart right in the spot the dogs brought it down.
We got to the archery with long bows. I haven't shot arrows since 8th grade at Bloch Junior High School. It came right back, as you can see from the results :)
The lunch they made us was exquisite. All locally grown and sourced, and made by these chefs in the pavilion. Truly special experience.
I hardly recognize myself in boots and jeans. Totally different look! I haven't worn boots since I went to Ireland in 2016.
After lunch we went to see the horses, mules, and baby cows and steers.
We also toured the new smokehouse. This fellow builds everything on the farm, really incredible workman.
Jeff, the cofounder of the farm, was wearing these Bitcoin crocs, so cool!
The sunset over the water was so beautiful tonight.
We had food catered in the hotel tonight.
This evening Robert Breedlove did his What Is Money podcast from the room where the Federal Reserve was secretly planned in 1910. It was a very insightful conversation. It's nice to be associating with people who see what a broken monetary system we live in, and want to be part of fixing it. Go Bitcoin!
Mitzi took a walk outside in the full moon tonight while I'm working on pictures and this blog post.
It's a very beautiful place.
Our second day at the Farm. I didn't go on the hunt this morning so Mitzi and I left together at 7a for the hour long drive.
When we got there they had these same ham and cheese croissants warm and ready for us. They also had these pastries with raspberry in the middle. Incredible and we both thought these were the best pastries we've ever had.
We did a variety of activities on the farm before lunch.
Mitzi did some archery. Like me, she hasn't shot an arrow since junior high school. It came right back and she did amazing. One of her shots went into the same space as the arrow before it.
She got a lot in the bulls-eye! These bows are beautiful laminate.
We did a walking tour of the farm gardens, cabins, and olive garden.
This is fresh ginger root. I've only ever seen the brown in the grocery store, these fresh roots are beautiful.
Jeff is the co-founder and visionary and one of the main financiers of the farm. His cabin is almost complete and we got to walk through. It's really nice.
They have these atlatls (precursor to the bow and arrow, it works by throwing a spear using a two foot long arm for leverage. Mitzi is so atheletic, she picked it right up!
My one throw was a bit strange, I threw it like a baseball and the spear and the handle both went flying haha.
We went to the Okenfenokee Swamp and canoed a couple miles. They had these nice bags for us with a fried chicken lunch which we ate while we canoed.
REally beautiful and peaceful out there.
We passed a lot of alligators out sunning themselves. And saw some huge cranes.
My lower back needed a break after a while. Mitzi got a picture as I laid back to stretch. It made her laugh and laugh.
Back at the farm we were pretty tired, but rallied and toured another cabin that is nearing completion. They are charming.
Around 4p they had smoked local oysters for us. Oh my, they were incredible.
Mitzi really likes the Mercedes G-Wagons. One of the visitors to the farm drove one in so she got a picture. Nice!
At 5:30p they started serving this incredible meal. There were about 40 people there filling up the picnic tables.
All the food came from the farm and were prepared by these amazing chefs.
As the meail progressed they brought out duck and tomahawk steaks.
Pork belly and a few other meats that I didn't get a picture of. We were so full!
As the moon was just about to rise, Judy who is coordinating the event for the Farm and with whom Mitzi because friends, came over all excited that the moon was about to rise. It's hard to tell in the picture but she is literally jumping up and down with excitement. She is 72 years old and you would never know it.
The dessert was a roasted apple with vanilla ice cream and gold foil and a chocolate cake with cacao nubs.
It was a beautiful evening as the moon rose over the lake.
We got back to the Jekyll Island Club Resort around 9:30p and were just exhausted. It was a wonderful two days at the farm.
A very authentic place for Mitzi and I loved it too.
